Planner Installation Methods

FAQ Troubleshooting

Installation Methods for Teal Digital Planner

  • Method #1 Using OneNote Importer Tool by Microsoft

Installation Method #1 involves using the 🔗OneNote Importer Tool by uploading the Teal Planner file to your Microsoft OneDrive personal account from the Microsoft website via the Importer link.

The OneNote Importer tool is compatible with all versions of OneNote and operational systems.

    👍Recommended for All Platforms

✔ Windows Users (All Windows versions)

    ✔ MAC iOS Users

    ✔ Android Users

The Importer method is recommended because of its universal compatibility and because native OneNote apps for Mac iOS, Android, and Windows 10 cannot open (.onepkg) files directly.

    📂 Which File to Use?

An unzipped (.ONE) OneNote file is a file with a .one extension that contains a single OneNote notebook including sections, pages, images, and other embedded content.

The OneNote Importer tool will only use an unzipped file with the extension (.ONE). Therefore, the first step is to unzip the planner notebook folder and then import the entire folder to OneDrive via the Importer link.

    ❌ Limitations

    (1) ❗ Be aware that OneNote notebooks cannot be uploaded using the Importer tool to a business account, SharePoint, or school account. However, if your OneNote version allows you to open (.onepkg) files, this would be the preferred method for SharePoint and business accounts. Alternatively, upload the planner to your personal OneDrive account and then share it with your business account with editing rights. Please see details in the SharePoint Business section.

    (2) ❗ The upload through OneNote importer is sensitive to the browser on your computer. Exporting notebooks is not currently supported in Windows Internet Explorer. Some users reported download errors with some versions of Safari and some versions of Firefox. It is recommended to use Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge on Windows 10.

  • Method #2 Opening (.Onepkg) file from OneNote App

Installation Method #2 involves directly opening a (.Onepkg) file through the OneNote desktop app for Windows users that come with Office Suite 2021/19/16 or a Microsoft 365 subscription.

This is the fastest and easiest method for all Windows users, except for the Windows 11 version of OneNote. Unfortunately, Apple iOS and Android users CANNOT use this method.

    👍 Recommended for Windows Users

    ✔OneNote that comes with Microsoft Office Suite 2021, 2019, 2016, and 2013

✔OneNote as part of a Microsoft 365 subscription

✔OneNote that comes with Windows 11

❌ except OneNote, which comes with Windows 10

The best method for Windows users since most versions of OneNote for Windows can open (.onepkg) files.

    📂 Which File to Use?

A (.onepkg) file is a package file used by Microsoft that allows for packing multiple OneNote documents (.one) into one single file format to store and transport notebooks. It is essentially a compressed archive that contains all the components of a OneNote notebook.

A (.onepkg) file can be opened by the majority of the OneNote versions of desktop apps that are part of a licensed Office suite and Microsoft 365 subscription. Opening a (.onepkg) file can be done either by double-clicking on the file or navigating to the planner (.onepkg) file from the OneNote app using the path File> Open> Browse.

    Limitations

    (1) ❗ Limitations for this method will apply to Apple/iOS and Android users, as their native OneNote versions don’t support (.onepkg) files. An exception will also be for Windows 10 users if they have only this version installed on their PC, so it is recommended to use method #1 with the importer link.

Alternatively, another option to open OneNote notebook files with a (.onepkg) extension for Apple and Android users would be to use third-party apps like Gem Menu for Mac or Outline.

  • Method #3 Copy Shared Notebook Sections

Installation method #3 - an alternative method of copying shared book sections by manually transferring sections from the shared Teal Planner to your personal notebook. However, this method is not ideal and could take some time; it is recommended to be used only when the main installation methods fail.

👍Recommended as an Alternative for All Platforms

For all platform users who were unable to install OneNotebook using the two main methods #1 Importer tool and #2 opening .onepkg file.

    📂 Which File to Use?

A shared OneNote notebook via link is a way to share a OneNote notebook with others by creating a link that can be sent to anyone, even if they don't have a OneNote account.

As an alternative method to install the teal planner, I will share a new copy of the Teal planner with you via email, and you'll need to manually transfer the notebook sections to a new notebook you've set up on your OneDrive account. This may take some time, depending on how many sections are in your purchased planner. Since it is a shared notebook, you need to transfer its content to your notebook; otherwise, your notes will not be private.

    ❌ Limitations

    (1) ❗ Time-Consuming: Sharing a Teal Planner copy via email and copying sections can be time-consuming, requiring you to copy each section individually. The Teal Planner typically has 20 sections, including 12 for each month, an annual section, and 7 Productivity sections.

    (2) ❗ Hyperlinks Limitation: Copying sections of a shared Teal Planner to OneDrive may pose a limitation with internal hyperlinks. If the shared Planner has hyperlinks, they may not function correctly in the copied version, as they still point to the original notebook. This method is not suitable for Teal Planners with hyperlinks but may work for regular Teal Planners without hyperlinks.

  • The Teal Digital Planner is not a physical notebook or printable PDF; instead, it's a digital, downloadable file created specifically for Microsoft OneNote. It's compatible with both versions of OneNote: OneNote for Windows 10 and OneNote (formerly called 2016), available in Microsoft Office 2019, 2021, and Office 365 for Windows users. Additionally, it is compatible with native OneNote versions for Mac and Android users.

The Teal planner is specifically designed to be used within the Microsoft OneNote application. As a result, the Teal Planner incorporates a variety of features and functionalities of MS OneNote, utilizing the classical hierarchies structure: Notebook-Sections-Subsection-Page. The planner also uses numerous imported images set as backgrounds, which may impact the size of the planner file and the initial upload time. On average, the planner file size is 207 Mb.

  • To use a Teal Digital Planner, you need a free personal Microsoft account and the OneNote program. OneNote is a free application available for download on Windows, Mac OS, iOS, and Android from the OneNote download link.

Every free personal Microsoft account comes with 5 GB of OneDrive storage, and 1 TB of storage is available with the Microsoft 365 personal plan at $6.99/month. Link to the Microsoft Plan: Microsoft 365 Products

All Teal Digital Planners for OneNote need to be imported or shared to your OneDrive account before you can use them. By uploading the Teal Planner to your Microsoft OneDrive account, you can access it on any of your mobile devices with the OneNote app installed. This includes devices running Windows, Android, or iOS.

A video detailing this process is available on our Tutorial Page. This is a one-time process that should be completed on a PC or Mac computer. Tutorial Page

  • Yes, you need Microsoft 365 for your OneNote planner to sync to your other devices. OneNote is a part of the Microsoft Office suite, and syncing across devices requires a Microsoft account and a subscription to Microsoft 365. With Microsoft 365, you can sync your OneNote notebooks across all your devices, including Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and the web. However, a free plan is available for a personal Microsoft account, which comes with 5 GB of OneDrive storage. Please check your OneNote planner’s file size and ensure you have enough space on your OneDrive. Without a Microsoft 365 subscription, you can still use OneNote, but syncing across devices will not be possible. However, there are third-party apps available that can help you sync OneNote with other planning apps, such as Planner or Todo.

  • Since some OneNote planners have large file sizes (the average planner size is 207 MB), it may take a few minutes to upload depending on your internet speed. If the upload takes hours or seemingly never ends, there are a couple of possible reasons:

You may not have enough space on your OneDrive. All personal accounts come with 5 GB, and Microsoft Office 365 accounts come with at least 1 TB. Please check the file size of your OneNote planner and ensure you have enough space on your OneDrive.

Try importing the files on a computer and not a mobile device. For optimal results, initially upload the Teal Planner OneNote notebook through your desktop app on a PC or Mac, saving it in an accessible location with the correct file format. Even if you plan to use it exclusively on your mobile device, such as an iPad, it is highly recommended to perform the first-time installation on your desktop.

Try using a different browser such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. The OneNote Importer upload is browser-sensitive, with Windows Internet Explorer not supporting notebook exporting. Users may encounter download errors with certain Safari and Firefox versions. It's advisable to use Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 for optimal performance.

Make sure pop-ups are enabled for your browser. If your browser blocks pop-ups automatically, then the upload may not be completed, and your notebook may appear to be importing endlessly. Please make sure you click "Upload" when the pop-up window appears.

Try method #2 using a (.onepkg) file. This method only works for Windows users with all versions of OneNote except Windows 10. If you have the option on your Windows computer to upload your Teal Planner by opening (.onepkg), do this preferred method the first time. Please refer to method #2 opening .onepkg files in your user manual and our website support page.

Copying the sections to a new notebook . Consider copying the sections to a new notebook as an alternative method (#3) if other options fail. This process may take longer but serves as a viable solution when all else fails. Note that it has limitations; refer to your user manual and our website support page for details.

  • When the error message "The selected folder is not a valid OneNote notebook" appears, it usually indicates that the wrong folder, such as the compressed one, was selected. Ensure you've extracted the files and chosen the folder containing (.one) files during the import. The OneNote Importer tool requires an unzipped file with the (.one) extension, so unzip the planner notebook folder as the first step before importing it to OneDrive through the Importer link.

Unzip the Planner file with a right-click, choosing "extract here" or "extract files." After the OneNote Importer tool loads in your browser, click Import, and navigate to the location of your unzipped Teal Digital Planner file. Upload the ENTIRE folder to preserve the planner structure.

❗ To avoid errors, do not attempt to open and load planner files partially. Instead, select the ENTIRE folder, preserving the structure of sections, subsections, and pages. Clicking on the Teal Planner folder won't display files; it appears empty with only a recycling bin folder. This happens because your internal file explorer doesn't recognize these file types. Rest assured, I'll confirm the presence of Teal Planner files. Your correct step: unzip the teal planner folder, select the entire folder, and click Upload.

  • The error message "Cannot edit notebook because it's in archive mode (Read only)" typically appears when the OneNote notebook is in read-only mode, preventing any changes. This occurs if the notebook is saved in a compressed folder or manually copied to OneDrive.

Manually copied to OneDrive: You moved or saved the (.one) files (unzipped OneNote Teal Planner files with the extension (.one)) to your OneDrive account. For instance, did you drag and drop the (.one) files to OneDrive?

Solution 1: Opt for the proper installation process using either Method #1 Importer Tool or Method #2 opening (.Onepkg) files through your OneNote desktop. Refer to your PDF user manual or watch our tutorial video on our website support page for guidance.

If the first issue doesn't apply to you, you can explore the following solutions:

Solution 2: Open the Notebook Through OneDrive Online

    1. Close the notebook on your OneNote program on your desktop and wherever else you have it open (i.e. iPad, tablet, phone, web browser).

    2. Head over to www.onedrive.live.com or www.onenote.com/notebooks. You may need to sign into the Microsoft account you had imported the planner to first if you aren't already signed in.

    3. Find the planner you had imported and double-click on it to open it within your web browser.

    4. On the menu bar, click on the "Editing" button and select "Open in Desktop App". This should open the notebook in your OneNote program. Make sure you close the browser page once you are finished.

  • If you encountered the error message "That Microsoft account doesn't exist" while attempting to sign in before the import process, you may be using a SharePoint or business account. Currently, Microsoft only permits the import of OneNote notebooks to personal Microsoft accounts, excluding business, SharePoint, or school accounts. However, you can still upload the Teal Planner OneNote notebook by either opening (.onepkg) files for Windows users or uploading the planner to your personal OneDrive account and then sharing it with your business account with editing rights. Refer to the "Limitation of Microsoft Business SharePoint & School Account" section in your user manual.
